The drive along Highway 1 through Big Sur is mesmerizing. I’ve had the pleasure of passing through before, but this is the first time I take it all in. My eyes are wide open to what the world has to offer. Thank you, Caleb.
The view of the turquoise water breaking against the shoreline and the sand cliffs is stunning. The scenic landmarks are endless. Distant lighthouses, mudstone natural bridges, waterfalls, and wharfs inundated with harems of seals. I wish we had the time to stop at each and every one, taking pictures and making memories like tourists. My heart smiles, knowing this is only the beginning.
After a few hours of driving, Caleb pulls the car over and points out that we’ve arrived at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. “Have you ever seen this?”
“Nope, I’ve heard of it, but always passed it on my way through.”
He’s like a kid at Christmas, unable to contain his excitement. “Oh man, Gabriella, you have no idea what you’ve been missing.”
We park at a convenient place along the road and Caleb takes my hand to lead me along a gravely trail. “It’s only a short hike and certainly worth the view. Come on.”
The trail leads us down to a lookout along the ocean side of the highway. Within minutes, I’m face to face with what is quite possibility the most beautiful site in nature I have ever laid eyes on.
A cascading waterfall empties itself into a cove that looks like it belongs in the movie The Blue Lagoon. The water is turquoise blue and crystal clear; the exotic foliage framing this masterpiece is a work of art itself.
I want to remember this moment forever, marking it as a first of many. We take a few selfies with the camera from my phone, and then I snap a few of the breathtaking view and Caleb alone, using the exquisite backdrop to accentuate his own beauty. I smile, knowing I can carry a piece of him with me now in the form of a memory laden snapshot.
“Thank you, Caleb, this is amazing.” I run into his arms and pull him close, thirsting for one of his hypnotic kisses.
“I can’t believe you’ve deprived yourself of this view all these years.”
He has no idea the things I’ve deprived myself of. I’m grateful to have been granted this opportunity to live life again.
“There’s a lot I haven’t taken advantage of, period. I’m a stubborn woman with a chip on her shoulder. I’d given up on the good things in life because of all the bad that overshadowed them for me. Thanks to you, those days are over.”
For like the millionth time since this all started, I’m afraid I’ve said too much. But Caleb sets my self-conscious mind at ease as he turns me around and wraps his arms around my body, nuzzling his nose into the crook of my neck. “You’re welcome, Gabriella. I want to experience everything good this life has to offer us. We both deserve it, don’t
